Ally Bank Interview (Communication Model)

This commercial is a clear example of the communication model in progress that was shown in chapter four. In my opinion, this example was appropriate because the component parts of the communication model are easily recognized. For instance, the occasion in which this communication is taking place is during a job interview. The man that is being interview in the commercial is the sender in this model. I recognized this because the man is providing another person with his thoughts and central ideas. In addition, the man who is conducting the interview is the receiver in this model. The encoding in this situation is both clear and correct because the sender has explained something to another person by using the correct word choice and portraying his message accurately. The message that the sender is giving through the channel to the receiver is also correct because he clearly states his thoughts and meaning so that the receiver is able to understand. As we know, decoding in the process of interpretation. The receiver must take in the message and be able to interpret it. However, in the specific example, the receiver does not interpret the message in the way that the sender intended. Therefore, in the decoding part of this communication situation, an ineffectiveness has occurred. As the receiver interprets the message, he generates a reaction. The receiver then takes on the role of the sender because he generates a response to the message that he received. Although in this example he generates inappropriate responses to the message, his is still providing a feedback message to the original sender. Finally, the new receiver (original sender) receives that feedback message and creates a reaction to it. In this example, the new receiver reacts with confusion because he does not understand why the sender is responding to him with ridiculous questions. This communication process continues with the cycle of sending and receiving until the interview comes to an end.

The element that is particularly significant to the ineffectiveness of this communication situation is the decoding of the receiver. For example, I believe there is a presence of internal noise, such as selective perception, which causes interference of the message. The receiver only reacts to his/her interpretation of the sender's message. Therefore, in this situation the receiver interpreted what the sender said entirely and made the interview awkward and unsuccessful. It is known that no two people have the same set of experiences or feelings in their lives. Personal traits such as values, beliefs, interests, and knowledge determine how a person sends or receives a message. In this example, I can assume that these two men do not share the same personal traits and this causes a miscommunication between them during the interview. This example is significant to human communication in general because it is important for senders to understand and handle any type of interference that may occur in a communication situation. We must also understand that when people communicate, it is not always possible for everyone to have the same set of meanings or understandings. Therefore, we as communicators must create a mutual respect and patience for one another in order to communicate successfully.
