Civic Engagement

What is "civic engagement"?
According to the Art of the Speaker: Effective Communication in Everyday Life, civic engagement is
"whenever we speak up in public about community issues."

Rallies and protests are the most common examples of civic engagement. Below is a picture of three young men protesting their disagreement with the Vietnam War.

Civic engagement can be very effective and can spread an important message. Other examples of civic engagement include people within a community speaking up about a problem or an issue they believe should be addressed.

This past year, my high school's Studies of Sexuality class was under attack by adults who were unhappy with the material being taught in the class. They attended board meetings and protested, demanding that the course be removed from the curriculum. This heated debate was even taken so far that there were videos made about it and posted on Youtube, mocking the Council Rock School District's ability to teach (video posted below).

As you can see, civic engagement can have a huge impact.
