National Gymnastics Day

For the past two years, I have been involved with National Gymnastics Day. Gymnastics clubs around the country participate in the Tyson Fitness Challenge and raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. This is an example of civic engagement because I was actively involved in community life and we were advocating the importance of being active and about the sport in general to young children. The sender in this situation was not really a person in particular, but the whole event in general. The message was that it is important to be healthy and physically active. The receiver was the crowd of people attending the event. The volunteers that were running the booths had to use different vocabulary and word choice depending on who they were talking to. There was a great deal of small children, but also parents as well. It was our job to make the children have fun with the activities, but also sound professional and informative when speaking to the adults. In the end, we raised about one thousand dollars for the Children's Miracle Network and all of the gymnastics clubs in the United States raised a total of 116,000 dollars.
