Gossip Girl - Rhetorical Situation

In this scene of the show Gossip Girl , Serena (blonde) and Blair (dark-hair) are having one of their weekly problems. They are said to be "best friends" but when they are jealous of each other and fight all of the time I'm not sure how that can hold true. To help resolve this issue, Blair's boyfriend, Chuck, tricks the two of them to meet up in the elevator of Blair's house and then holds them hostage in the elevator until they work their issue out, which they do by the end of this small scene.

This scene demonstrates a rhetorical situation. There was obviously an problem existing between the two of them that needed to be advised. The issue involving the two of them is an exigence. They communcated back and forth, unwillingly at first, and were eventually able to solve the issue. Chuck was really the only audience becuase he was secretly listening through the elevator. The only constraint in this situation was the fact that neither of them knew they were going to be running into each other so they weren't expecting to resolve this issue right then and there. Also, neither of them wanted to be there at that moment so they had to force themselves to talk to each other which would limit the communication process as well.

One element that is particularly significant to the rhetorical situation is constraints. They limit the process of communication. If the two girls knew they would be meeting to solve this issue they may have been a little more prepared and maybe would have had a better idea of what they were going to say. There are many other examples of constraints such as loud noises which can also limit the communication process because the receiver may not fully understand what the sender is trying to portray.
